New opportunities…

Four things come not back: The spoken word, The sped arrow, The past life, The neglected opportunity.” Arabian Proverb

It all started with a trip to Turkey last year… meeting other nurses… talking about international nursing opportunities… I started applying for positions in Saudi Arabia last summer, but then found out I didn’t have the mandatory 2 years nursing experience. So I put it on the back burner for a while… and then life got in the way…

However, a couple weeks ago, things in my life changed and I decided I needed a change of pace. I recieved an email notifying me of employment opportunities available at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC)  in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, due to the opening of a large new cancer and liver disease center at the hospital.

Perfect opportunity. Perfect timing. Perfect position for me!!

So, I sent in my application through the nursing agency on May 5, expecting that it would take several weeks and an interview or two before I’d know if I had a job or not.

The next day, May 6, I got a call from the nursing agency… KFSHRC was offering me a position in Adult Oncology/Hematology at the brand new King Abdullah Cancer Center and Liver Disease Center. 24 hours doesn’t give me much time to process, but to a girl who’s dreamed of working in cancer care for nearly as long as she’s wanted to be a nurse, which has been almost my entire childhood and adult life to date… it was a most definite YES! The professional opportunity is incredible! New training and education… a unique cultural experience… the opportunity to work at a brand new, world class hospital… and the potential for so much personal growth and development… I am so incredibly excited!!

In nursing, the opportunity to get advanced training and education doesn’t come around very often and if it does, it is usually after years of experience and searching for opportunities. This is like a dream come true for a nerd like me! Plus… I get to travel the world in the process. BONUS!!

So… now I’m in the middle of muddling through all my paperwork and counting down the days until I get to go. I feel most days like I’m living a bit of a dream and I’m just so excited to go… I don’t think it’s seriously hit me yet that I’m going to be leaving my incredibly supportive and wonderful family behind… and all the amazing nurses and doctors I currently work with… and all my friends… to go to a country where I know no-one… gaahhh! I expect the next few months will bring a lot of challenges in that sense… I do hate to leave everyone! But this is one opportunity that I cannot miss! And knowing that makes it a little easier. Plus, I know it’s only for a year (or so I say right now…)

Well… going to get back to learning some basic Arabic…

Maa al-Salama. Good-bye
